Sliding Scale

borrowed & adapted from Radical History Club's model

What is a sliding scale?

There is no exact formula that determines what each of us can afford, because income is not the only determining factor. For example, your relationship to money might also be affected by being a caregiver, your access to generational wealth, and/or costs related to a disability. A capitalist system determines our financial access and value by class, race, perceived gender identity, disability/ability and/or immigration status among many other systems of imposed hierarchy.

A sliding scale is used to encourage people to pay according to their available resources. Those with greater financial access contribute more, allowing those with less access to pay according to their means. This increases accessibility to more people than could ordinarily afford services.

How do I choose what to pay?

The Green Bottle chart below expands our understanding of financial access and experience. Please use it to determine the amount you’re able to invest per session or per workshop.

Why might I feel uncomfortable about this?

Capitalism persists because of its ability to transmit shame, and therefore halt the uncomfortable tasks required to upend it.

If you can offer less than Tier 2 per grief counseling session or workshop, please do so. In the words of Britt Hawthorne, poverty is a condition that governments and employers insist on maintaining.

If you can offer more than Tier 2 per grief counseling session or workshop, please do so. Your decision to invest more is an act of solidarity and a refusal to accept the benefits of racial capitalism and class privilege. Your investment will support more people to have access to this healing work, regardless of their ability to pay a certain amount.

Everyone deserves access to this healing work.  I have a deep faith that whatever amount you choose is the right amount and this work will have the support that it needs to thrive.

The amount you choose now is not set in stone.  Our agreement is always adjustable and negotiable as life changes.  When in doubt, relax and let's talk.
